- What is the difference between a skill and a plugin?
- A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file (instructions plus optional scripts) that an agent loads when a task matches, following the open Agent Skills format. A plugin is an installable bundle that can contain skills, slash commands, subagents, hooks and MCP servers. Claude Code and Codex both install plugins from marketplaces.
- How do I install a Claude Code plugin?
- In a Claude Code session run
/plugin install <name>@claude-plugins-official, or from your shellclaude plugin install <name>@claude-plugins-official. Each plugin page here shows the exact command. - Can I use these skills outside Claude Code?
- Skill folders in the open format can be installed into GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI with GitHub CLI 2.90+ (
gh skill install OWNER/REPO SKILL --agent ...). Check each host's docs, because support differs. - Are these safe?
- Not automatically. Anthropic and GitHub both say they do not verify what third-party plugins and skills contain. Read the source (linked on each page) before installing, especially anything with hooks, MCP servers or scripts.
